Introduction: the elective induction of labor in low risk patients allows the obstetrician to potentially decrease adverse effects caused by maternal anxiety at the end of the pregnancy. The objective of this investigation is to determine the security and effectiveness of the misoprostol in the ambulatory elective induction of labor in low risk patients with term pregnancies attending the Clinical Maternity Rafael Calvo in Cartagena, Colombia.
Methodology: a randomized controlled trial with placebo was done in low risk term pregnant patients that consulted to the Maternity from May 1st 2002 to the end of March of 2004. Patients were distributed in 3 groups: in patient misoprostol, ambulatory misoprostol, and placebo. Data was analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Chi square.
Results: 20 patients were assigned to the in-patient group, 20 to the out-patient group, and 6 patients in the placebo group. There was a shorter time interval to initiate labor in the group of ambulatory misoprostol. Adverse effects were no different in the three groups.
Conclusion: misoprostol used in ambulatory elective induction of labor is safe and effective.
