Abstract

Introduction: gestational surrogacy by means of in vitro fertilisation or other assisted reproduction techniques represents the only current alternative for patients suffering from absolute uterine factor infertility (UFI) who wish to bear a biological child. However, this practice remains controversial in some societies; a lot of research has thus been done for more than thirty years regarding uterine transplants, considering it to be a therapeutic possibility for these patients. The first human uterine transplant was recently accomplished with favourable results. The present paper is aimed at reviewing the current literature describing the state of the art concerning uterine transplant regarding surgical technique, pregnancy in animal grafts and their outcomes, the story of the first uterine transplant in humans, its theoretical complications and some ethical and legal issues concerning uterus transplantation.

Methods: a search was made of several databases; original basic and clinical studies as well as reviews were included for analysis.

Results: although little information was found in the current literature, great efforts have been made for advancing basic and clinical studies aimed at finally carrying out a safe and successful uterine transplant for treating UFI and providing such patients with the possibility of bearing a biological child of their own.
