Abstract

With the advance reached in the knowledge of all the aspects related to the primary dysmenorrhea, nowadays there are substances and outlines of pharmacological treatment, guided to alleviate and even to prevent the painful manifestations that generates this feminine condition. It is presented in the following revision the current concepts that explains the events involved in the physiopathology, and they are pointed out and detailed own considerations with regard to the benefits generated by the NSAIDs and the contraceptive oral pills, the therapeutic measures that should be used. The alternative handling measures, proposed in the last years, are presented.

The severity of the pelvic pain during the menstrual phase, defined as primary dysmenorrhea, can be minimized if the health professional has a clear vision of the physiopathology of this condition, if he provides information and education to his patients with regard to the related aspects, and if he recommends and stimulate the preservative use of the different agents that inhibit or impede the synthesis of prostaglandins, while he contributes to eradicate the current myths in the community that impede the correct understanding for adopting truly effective measures.
