Prevalence of cervical intraepithelial squamous lesions in patients attending a teaching hospital in Bogotá, Colombia, being cytologically diagnosed as suffering from atypical squamous cells having undefined significance (ASCUS)

Objective: describing colposcopic and histopathological findings for patients diagnosed by pap smear as having atypical squamous cell having undetermined significance (ASCUS) for guiding unified handling protocols of this cytological abnormality in our population.
Materials and methods: a cross-sectional study carried out between February 2003 and April 2005 in women attending the Samaritana teaching hospital having a cytological diagnosis of ASCUS.
Each patient’s gynaecological-obstetrics antecedents and population data were evaluated; the information was processed using SPSS 10.0 software.
Results: 339 females (39 years old average age) were analysed. Colposcopy revealed that 37.8% had low-grade intraepithelial squamous lesions (LG-ISL) and 10.9% high-grade intraepithelial squamous lesions (HG-ISL). Histopathology revealed human papilloma virus (HPV) infection in 29.5% of the cases, 15% LG-ISl and 10.3% HG-ISl. Invasive carcinoma was diagnosed in 0.6% of the females.
Conclusion: ASCUS covers a diversity of pathological alterations from cervicytis to cervical cancer requiring appropriate study and handling.
