Papanicolau en los Estados Unidos y Ruriel Babes en Rumania, hicieron las primeras publicaciones sobre el uso de la citología exfoliativa para el diagnóstico del cáncer, en el año de 1928. En 1941 Papanicoloau y Traut publicaron en el "Am. J. of Obst. and Gynec." la monografía titulada "El valor diagnóstico del frotis vaginal en carcinoma del útero". Desde esta época la citología exfoliativa abrió nuevos horizontes investigativos y a medida que se fue comprobando su eficacia y exactitud, se fueron descubriendo nuevas aplicaciones tanto clínica como experimentales y se fue popularizando su empleo, hasta considerarse actualmente como procedimiento rutinario en la mayoría de las instituciones médicas de los países más adelantados del mundo.References
