Estados hipertensivos del embarazo. I. Hipertensión arterial inducida por el embarazo

La enfermedad hipertensiva que se presenta en mujeres embarazadas puede ser producida por cualquiera de las causas conocidas de hipertensión arterial. Sin embargo, se conoce como toxemia del embarazo a un síndrome de aparición exclusiva durante la gestación humana, generalmente después de la vigésima semana y caracterizado por hipertensión, edema y proteinuria. Esta denominación es inexacta ya que hasta el momento no se ha identificado ninguna toxina responsable del síndrome y por ello algunos prefieren denominarla hipertensión inducida por el embarazo y otros EPH- Gestosis, denominación que representa las iniciales de los signos clínicos: edema, proteinuria e hipertensión. Para evitar confusión preferimos usar en este capítulo la denominación convencional de toxemia del embarazo.
