El análisis de las metas de la obstetricia actual revela como uno de sus mayores logros en los últimos treinta años, la disminución impresionante de la mortalidad materna; sin embargo, la mortalidad perinatal ha permanecido sensiblemente estática en una cifra elevada si se le compara con otros grupos de edades, e inclusive hasta con épocas avanzadas de la vida.
