Prevalencia de tabaquismo en una población de embarazadas en el Hospital Universitario San Vicente de Paúl en Medellín (Colombia)

Objetivo: determinar la prevalencia del tabaquismo durante el embarazo y sus factores asociados.
Materiales y métodos: estudio de corte transversal en pacientes gestantes a quienes se les realizó una encuesta en el servicio de Medicina Materno Fetal del Hospital Universitario de la Fundación San Vicente de Paúl en Medellín, en el período de septiembre de 2009 a noviembre de 2010. Se realizó un muestreo secuencial consecutivo estricto. Se evaluó la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco, el porcentaje de suspensión durante la gestación, la edad y el número de hijos.
Resultados: se realizaron 2171 encuestas. La prevalencia de tabaquismo fue de 7,3%, (IC 95% 6,3 - 8,5), de éstas el 56% (90gestantes) dejaron de fumar cuando se enteraron de su embarazo. En las 70 pacientes que continuaron fumando el promedio de consumo fue de 7,2 cigarrillos al día.
Conclusión: el consumo de cigarrillo durante el embarazo es un problema que afecta a nuestras gestantes. Se deben hacer nuevos estudios de tipo poblacional de mayor cobertura para evaluar con mayor precisión la magnitud del problema.
