Papanicolaou en los Estados Unidos y Babes en Rumania en el año de 1928, hicieron las primeras publicaciones sobre el uso de la Citología Exfoliativa para el diagnóstico del cáncer. Sinembargo solo hasta el año de 1943, en que Papanicolaou y Traut publicaron la clásica monografía titulada "Diagnosis of uterine cancer by the vaginal smear" (12), recibió este método acogida en el seno de la ciencia Médica.
