Los senos han sido considerados por tiempo inmemorial como símbolo que refleja la capacidad de maternidad en la mujer.
El tamaño de los senos, por otra parte, en el cual la mayoría de las mujeres basan sus atributos maternales, no está de acuerdo siempre, con sus capacidades de lactancia.
Hoy día, debido a las facilidades de alimentación artificial en algunos países del mundo, ha hecho que los especialistas contemplen con indiferencia los diferentes problemas de lactancia.
Los valiosos conocimientos de lactancia de que actualmente disponemos, son el fruto de 36 años de investigaciones llevadas a cabo por el profesor Charles W. Turner, de Columbia. Missouri. Estados Unidos, así como también de más de dos décadas de investigación realizadas por el profesor S. J. Folley y colaboradores, de Shinfield. Berkshire, Inglaterra.
