La metamorfosis grasa aguda del hígado en el embarazo, o esteatosis espongiocitaria aguda del hígado del embarazo de los franceses, fue descrita en la literatura médica por primera vez por Stander en 1934 y luego por Sheehan en 1940, recopiló y presentó los primeros 20 casos, haciendo el análisis clínico e histopatológico de ellos.
